Charm Sticks

This sculpture was created to honor 100 distinguished alumnae from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. Our goal was to make a work that symbolized creative women who accomplished via creative acts. The original concept was to play with the idea of charms, as in charm bracelets, which are objects that most of us equate with girls. Each honoree’s name would be attached to a “charm”.
We combined the charm bracelet idea with the stick iconography that pervades much of our work.
“Charm Sticks” took form with the sticks becoming branches and the charms becoming leaves that attached to those branches. In order to emphasize a jewel effect we used fishing swivels and screw eyes. The green, to yellow, to red pallet of the leaves is intended to mirror phases of accomplishment, Spring thru Autumn, youth to maturity. Made of carved poplar and aluminum. 4'x10'x2"
